Forest Management

Thinking about the Future of Forests.
This Means Thinking about the Future of People.

Forests are indispensable to us for a variety of reasons. For instance, they provide us with timber,
help prevent disasters, provide habitats for living creatures, and offer us clean water and comfortable landscapes.
How can we use these irreplaceable resources sustainably while at the same time harnessing their benefits?
We are developing forests with an eye to the next 100 years, centering on Daiei Kankyo Group's company-owned forests in 29 locations across Japan, covering an area of approximately 8,170 hectares.
This project is a symbol of the Daiei Kankyo Group ahead of our centennial anniversary.

About Company-owned forests

Company-owned forests nationwide

Our Group manages the forests to realize a sustainable forest management. The forests are owned by General Agriculture & Forestry Co., Ltd., a consolidated subsidiary. In order to pass on healthy forests to future generations for the next 100 years, we have been working to coexist with local communities by considering the future of forest and human beings together with all our supporters both inside and outside of Japan.

Sustainable Forest Management

Our forest conservation business is positioned as a symbolic business which is consistent with the Daiei Kankyo Group’s Management Vision of enhancing business continuity and evolving as a company with the power to create better environments. We continue our efforts to coexist with local communities through the creation of forest products, biodiversity conservation, and local cooperation in landscape development and disaster prevention.

Sustainable Forest Management

Forest conservation agreement

In October 2016, Daiei Kankyo Co., Ltd. and General Agriculture & Forestry Co., Ltd. signed an environmental conservation agreement with Mimata Town, Miyazaki, for contributing to conservation of the forest environment and the development of the local community.
We have been working on forest surveys, road network maintenance, and voluntary work to ensure appropriate forest conservation in the town.

Conservation of biodiversity

Certified as a Natural Symbiosis Site (site name: Daiei Kankyo Miyazaki Mimata Forest)

On October 6, 2023, General Agriculture & Forestry Co., Ltd., a consolidated subsidiary, acquired certification of a specified area in a Company-owned forest located in Mimata Town, Miyazaki as a Natural Symbiosis Site by the Ministry of the Environment, which certifies sites that meet the criteria for conservation value and management plans. This program covers locations where conservation of biodiversity is promoted through the initiatives of private sectors and organizations.
This certification enabled us to give form to the idea that directing awareness to the broader ecosystem, rather than only rare species, will lead to sustainable communities. Going forward we will continue to cooperate with local communities and experts, monitor and manage the certified site, and take steps to conserve biodiversity thereby contributing to Nature Positive by 2030.*

Monitoring survey
A monitoring survey is performed regularly in the certified site, timed to coincide with blooming each season. A local expert also accompanies us as we identify plants discovered and record location and other information.
The information on plants discovered during surveys is also linked to Forest GIS and is used as one part of the materials for making decisions on considering forest areas to thin and the thinning method in the forest in Mimata Town, Miyazaki owned by Daiei Kankyo, which has long been forestry land.

Disaster prevention activities

Typhoons in 2004 and 2011 caused 10 hectares of landslides in a company-owned forest in Odai Town, Mie Prefecture. Restoration work is being car-ried out through a public works project of Mie Prefecture. Along with performing regular restoration tasks, we are continuing to work with the prefec-ture on the Odai Project, a reforestation project to further improve disaster preparedness and biodiversity functions. Another of our company-owned forests, located in Mimata Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a treasure trove of rare plants and southern limit species. From the perspective of biodiversi-ty, we are conducting investigations to conserve these species and their ecosystems.

Odai Project

This project, running from FY2016 to FY2023, aims to cultivate diverse forests by planting a variety of local saplings on collapsed sediment deposits, incorporating the natural distribution method. Under the project, which combines disaster preparedness and bio-diversity with environmental education, Daiei Kankyo Group em-ployees are responsible for seedling production (seed collection and cultivation) and some of the planting.
